Where Will You Be in 5 Years?
I found this very good Lou Holtz quote at Eric Musselman’s Basketball Notebook:
The only thing that’s going to change you from where you are now to where you’ll be five years from now are the people you meet, the books you read, and the dreams you dream.
I find this very applicable to me as I transition from my 9-5 job. Although I am pursuing a career in basketball, I feel this quote is applicable to any profession outside of sports.
Something Lou touches on in the video compilation is the aspect of maintaining, something he feels he should never have done at Notre Dame. In a way this is what I was doing at my 9-5, and I became increasingly turned off by it. I don’t really regret it, as I feel it’s played a key role in motivating me to change, and plays into another quote I found in the video:
embrace change when change is necessary for success
I could easily apply for and obtain a job similar to what I was doing before, but this would be counterproductive to me being successful. Although I’d be paid fairly well, I would not consider that a success as many others would, as my room for growth and being happy with what I do would be severely limited. Change is very necessary, so I’m going at it will open arms (even if my wife cringes at the thought of it).
Success is more than money, and I figure everyone should ask themselves from time to time: “What am I doing to be successful?”. I don’t have a problem if you define success as money, but I hope there is more to it than that for you.

To me, money alone doesn’t complete the equation of success. To love what I’m doing is what true success is to me.
Thanks for sharing the wonderful quote. I wish you all the best in finding what you love.

I definately agree with you there!!! There is more to success than money and I think more people should realise that before work eats away at their lives!! I wish I could give up my 9-5 but at the moment it´s impossible. I do hope and dream, that in the future, I´ll have a nice retirement home (hopefully before that stage) in the south of France.. oo.. or Spain! We have to dream..money does tend to make the world go around but you yourself can make your world a happier place to be!

Yes, I agree with you. That success is more than money becoz money gives just happiness for that moment whereas success gives joy or satisfaction or completeness feeling for the life that we have achieved something.

That’s true - when you don’t move forward it’s like moving backwards. As you get older you should be achieving more and more - if you’re not you’re getting behind everyone else.

Success is far more than just about money. I measure success by how great I feel on how much I have accomplished. I want to focus on working on my blog, and I won’t sell the blog out because success to me means I continue on with my blog through thick and thin without quitting.

I’ve read somewhere that only about 5% of people stick to the “plan A” life, the rest have been forced by often unforeseen consequences or bad choices to choose “plan B”. It’s not necessarily worse than plan A, in fact often it’s a lot better, since you’ve experienced a bit more and know more about yourself.
Where will I be in 5 years? I have no idea. And I like it!

That’s a really nice quote by Lou Holtz. Its important to change things up, sometimes you need a whole batch of change before you get any higher, or lower for that matter. Success is definitely more than just, money. If you are not happy with what you are doing. Then change that! Its much better to say I tried something new and did not like it then to say I stayed at the place I hated because I was afraid of change.

It’s obvious that the success Lou Holtz enjoyed at Notre Dame keyed on his understanding of people and not just players and game tactics.
The first answer that comes to mind when someone asks me this is that I won’t be making the same mistakes I did 5 years ago.

Whenever I tell them I’ve been with the same girl for 5 years, it seems that they seem to become more interested in me for some reason even though I don’t pursue them or give them any reason to think I am trying to hit on them. Why is this? To the women out there, do you become more interested in a guy when you find out hes been in a relationship for a long time or married?
